The 2025 Subway Series picks up again as the New York Mets host the Yankees for a three-game set at Citi Field this weekend. While both teams looked shaky over the last month, plenty of baseball remains before October rolls around.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said this on Thursday: “What’s done is done. We have to focus on the next challenge, and when it’s the Subway Series, the energy is through the roof. We’ll be ready.”
Even with their recent struggles, the Mets and Yankees still rank among the top ten MLB teams. Both have slipped to second in their divisions and both need a win this weekend. Here’s what you need to know if you want to catch the action. All games will be available to stream on fubo (you can try it for free).
Subway Series Schedule
Date | Time (ET) | Pitching Matchup | TV | Live Stream |
---|---|---|---|---|
Friday, 7/4 | 3:10 p.m. | RHP Marcus Stroman (1-1, 8.16) vs. RHP Justin Hagenman (0-0, 1.50) | SNY, YES, MLBN | fubo |
Saturday, 7/5 | 4:10 p.m. | LHP Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.95) vs. RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 6.00) | SNY, YES, FS1 | fubo |
Sunday, 7/6 | 1:40 p.m. | LHP Max Fried (10-2, 2.13) vs. LHP Brandon Waddell (0-0, 2.55) | SNY, YES | fubo (regional) |
The Mets have been hit hard by injuries, with six starters out and the pitching staff stretched thin. That’s why Hagenman and Waddell are getting starts this weekend. Recent rainouts and doubleheaders have only made things tougher for the Mets’ pitchers.
Here are some things to keep in mind about the series in Queens.
1. Yankees Took the Last Matchup
Back in May, the Mets and Yankees played three games at Yankee Stadium during Rivalry Weekend. Juan Soto made his return to the Bronx and got showered with boos from the home fans. The Yankees won the series.
- Fri., May 16: Yankees 6, Mets 2
- Sat., May 17: Mets 3, Yankees 2
- Sun., May 18: Yankees 8, Mets 2
Even with that loss, the Mets have done well head-to-head lately. They’ve won 13 of the last 21 Subway Series games going back to 2021, including 8 of the last 10 played at Citi Field. The last Yankees win in Queens was on June 13, 2023 when Max Scherzer started for the Mets and Michael King, now with the Padres, got the save.
2. Juan Soto is Rolling
When these teams last met, everyone was asking what was wrong with Juan Soto. He had just signed a huge 15-year, $765 million contract and was off to a slower start than usual. Against the Mets he went 1-for-10 and dropped his average to .246, but that was really just a slow start by his standards.
Since then, he’s caught fire. Soto won NL Player of the Month for June and has been one of the hottest hitters in the league:
- Batting Average: .320 (25th in MLB)
- On-Base Percentage: .473 (1st)
- Slugging Percentage: .680 (3rd)
- OPS: 1.153 (1st)
That raised his season line to .260/.396/.500 with 20 homers and 10 steals. Any early panic was wasted energy.
Aaron Judge, who had a cold stretch last month, has also bounced back. Over the last 14 games, he’s batting .348 with five homers and more walks than strikeouts. Both Judge and Soto come into the series in great shape at the plate.
3. Both Clubs Struggling Lately
Neither the Mets nor the Yankees are playing their best baseball. The Mets are 5-14 in their last 19 games and have been outscored 117-61. The Yankees have gone 6-14 in their last 20, including a four-game sweep by the Blue Jays. They lost their first-place spot for the first time since mid-April. Both teams badly need this series.
4. Who’s Hot and Who’s Not?
Baseball is all about streaks. This weekend, a few players come in red hot and others are looking to get it going.
Yankees’ recent standouts (last two weeks):
- Jasson Domínguez: 46 PA, .419/.435/.535, 0 HR, 4 RBI
- Trent Grisham: 44 PA, .270/.386/.486, 2 HR, 3 RBI
- Ben Rice: 43 PA, .257/.395/.543, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Grisham and Rice were key for the Yankees early in the year, cooled off in May, and are hot again. Domínguez is making everything happen except the home runs right now.
On the other hand, Paul Goldschmidt’s hot streak has fizzled (.152 average last two weeks), and catcher Austin Wells is struggling through a hand problem, batting .185 in that span.
Mets’ top bats (last 14 days):
- Pete Alonso: 54 PA, .265/.333/.388, 1 HR, 4 RBI
- Jeff McNeil: 39 PA, .257/.308/.400, 1 HR, 4 RBI
- Brandon Nimmo: 53 PA, .320/.358/.600, 4 HR, 9 RBI
Alonso and McNeil haven’t been firing on all cylinders, but Nimmo has been solid. Francisco Lindor is in a cold spell and Mark Vientos hasn’t made much impact since his return. Scoring runs is a struggle for the Mets lately.
Series Prediction
Let’s call it: Mets take two out of three, even if their pitching is a mess on paper. They’ll grab wins on Friday and Saturday, pushing the Yankees’ losing streak to six games, before New York bounces back behind Fried on Sunday. Aaron Judge has been getting intentional walks left and right, and the Mets will probably take the safe route with him a few times this weekend. Grab your seat for some fireworks in Queens.
